August 12th, 2008
Good Evening,

John and I have developed this web site to make our work available for the benefit of the visually impaired. We would like to welcome you to the site and we invite your constructive comments and criticism about the site and the current state of development of the Freedom Reader and our computer software. We would be especially happy to hear from our visually impaired visitors, whose understanding of these matters, of course, surpasses that of any sighted person. What works, what doesn’t, where the current state of the art in ANY low vision aid falls short…all of this is useful information.

For us, this site, the Freedom Reader, the word processor, etc. have been a labor borne of an earnest desire to be of help, even if only in a small way. A device such as the freedom reader or an application such as the word processor takes hours, days, weeks, months, years to design, to build, to test. We are far from finished, and the purpose of this site is to invite you on our journey. We believe everyone has something to contribute. If you feel that way too, and you are comfortable open sourcing your work for the benefit of the visually impaired, you can be assured that you will be given credit for your work and your work will not be in vain.

It is unfortunate, but anytime work is open sourced, the creator of that work runs the risk of someone exploiting that work for personal financial gain. Most open sourced software contains lengthy EULAs. Our home page on freedomreader.net states our only view on this: download and use at will, give credit to those whose work your are building upon, and share your innovations as others shared with you. To do otherwise is the vilest form of arrogance. Enough said.

Please expect fits and starts as we get the site underway; expect delays as we develop the next generation of our work; please don’t be bashful about what you believe you can contribute in terms of time and talent.

Best Regards,

John and Mark Kahrhoff
